Durga Puja is the celebration of ‘life’ and the joy of ‘living’ more than anything else. Durga Puja becomes an expression of the community itself. It is almost that the community bursts into laughter and joy during these few days. This year Durga Puja was grandly celebrated till the ninth day of bright lunar fortnight (shukla paksha) in the hindu month of Ashvin
Around one week before the festival started, a sprawling Durga puja “Pandal” was set up in the open ground of Toronto Kalibari premises, it was center of the Durga Puja celebrations.
On the occasion of Mahalaya, the Goddess was invited to come to the earth, in an auspicious ritual, that took place on September 27th. After the pratima of Goddess Durga were installed, the ritual of Pran Pratisthan was performed to invoke her holy presence into the pratima on Saptami.
For Hindus “Puja” is a form of worship of a god through prayers, rituals, and songs. Even though Durga Puja is a merry feast and social event with many secular elements, it is inherently a religious celebration to honor the goddess Durga.
During the five-day event over 8000 people paid tribute to the goddess, people made offerings and honored her in ceremonies, prayers, and songs. Each of the five days of the festival had different ceremonies and rituals associated with it which were performed by a priest at the pandal before large crowds of worshippers.
Most people attended the pandal for daily ceremonies, music, dances, and food. Families dressed up in their best clothes as they visited pandals and offered their prayers before the pratima of Maa Durga..
Worship was concluded on Dashami (October 07) with Sindur Khela and a maha aarti, which marked the end of the important rituals and prayers.

পুজোর স্বাদ মেলে টরেন্টো কালীবাড়ির দুর্গাপুজোয়
“এবারের পুজো কাটছে কানাডার টরেন্টো শহরে। বিখ্যাত টরেন্টো কালীবাড়িতে ষষ্ঠীর সন্ধে কাটিয়ে মনে হল যেন কোনও ঐতিহ্যবাহী জমিদার বাড়ির পুজোতে বসে রয়েছি। যেখানে পুজোর আচার নিয়মাবলী সুন্দর ও সুষ্ঠ ভাবে মেনে চলা হচ্ছে। কোথাও কোনও অতিরিক্ত আড়ম্বর নেই। টরেন্টোতে দীর্ঘ দিন ধরে যে সব বাঙালিরা রয়েছেন তাঁদের তত্ত্বাবধায়নে সমস্ত ব্যবস্থা হয়েছে পুজোর আয়োজনের।
কালীবাড়ির পাশেই আয়াতকার সাদা রঙের বিশাল একটা তাঁবুর মতো ঘর তৈরি হয়েছে। এই ঘরটি তাঁবুর কাপড়ের মতই প্লাস্টিকের। ভেতরে যারা ঠাকুর দেখতে এসেছি দশ ডিগ্রি সেলসিয়াস ঠাণ্ডাতে জ্যাকেট সোয়েটার চাদরে নিজেদের গরম রাখার চেষ্টা করছি। কিন্ত সঙ্গে আছে লম্বা লম্বা আগুন জ্বালানো থাম, যার ওপরে গ্যাসের আগুনে পুরো তাঁবুর ভেতরটা গরম রাখার ব্যবস্থা নেওয়া হয়েছে। অসাধারণ মন্ত্র পড়ে অধিবাস অনুষ্ঠিত হল। এই টরেন্টো কালীবাড়িতে রোজ কলকাতার পাঁজির সময় ধরেই দুর্গাপুজো এই কদিন ধরে সম্পন্ন হবে। সাথে কালীপুজোও পালিত হবে আসল মন্দিরে প্রতিদিনই। মা দুর্গার প্রতিমাটি নিজে হাতে তৈরি করেছেন এখানের এক দীর্ঘ দিনের বাসিন্দা শ্রীমৃণাল দত্ত রায়। “
